SOMATOTYPING: DOES A BOY'S BUILD DETERMINE HIS CHARACTER? According a study entitled "Varieties of Delinquent Youth" (Harper & Bros, New York) by William H Sheldon, which we have briefly reviewed, a boy's temperament may decidedly be reflected in his build. This book illustrates various types of male physiques from the very thin (extreme ectomorphs) to the very fat (extreme endomorphs) and to the other side of the somatotype triangle, the muscle boy (extreme mesomorph). We find that among the male population in a typical college that while the bulk of the young men ore a blending of all three components: endo-, mesoand ectomorphy,, there is a lesser but more-or-less equal distribution of men at the outer edges of the somatotype triangle, that is those who are more pronouncedly thin, muscular, or fat.

However, when we review a group of delinquent boys, the somatotype distribution changes radically. Then we find that the great bulk of the boys are in the Endo-Mesomorphic area that is they are of the comparitively heavy muscular type. Few are either extreme endomorphs or extreme ectomorphs. As with a college population, a sizeable group are even blends. It is important here that we stop to consider that so-called delinquent behaviour though socially unacceptable may actually. In the jungle it is usually the aggressive, pugnacious animals who survive. In pioneer days, it

be biologically advantagensitive, nor the heavy or lazy men who forged a new land, America's toughest fighting force, the US

was not the timid, the

marines seems to have an unwritten rule against accepting any but endo-mesomorphic physiques.

Obviously the endo-mesomorph must curb his pugnaciousness in the interests of the welfare of the social group. The com-

petition of bodybuilding, weight training etc., often proves a valuable outlet for stored-up energies. More about somatotyping II

in a later issue. Any readers who have done research on this subject are requested to send us their findings.
